Spelling and Capital in IELTS Listening Test

The most common questions arising when I teach IELTS Listening in the class from the students taking IELTS Course whether it is important to write the correct spelling in the answer sheet and to write the answer in capital letters, or on the reverse, write the answer in lower case.

Initially, at the beginning of listening class especially to new students attending the IELTS Preparation Course at www.IELTSjakarta.com, I usually convey them some tips and tricks which should be done to reach expected score that they need. So, they could use these tips when practicing their listening skill required in IELTS test. Again, before I set the recording for the students to exercise their listening skill, I will repeat these tips and tricks trying to remind them the simple things they could do to raise their score.

One of the tricks is that they should write the answers with the right spelling. Actually, some sources say that it is important to write all of the answers in sentence case, which it needs to make capital letter at the beginning of the words as long as it is appropriate. As an example, the student should write Spanish, not spanish, since it is the name of language. On the other hand, some sources also say that it will not affect the score if the candidates write the answers either in capitals or in lower case. However, even though these rules would not affect the score, I always remind the students to use capital letter for the first alphabet if it comes to the name of people, country, language, date, name of road, or other words which need to be capital at the first alphabet. This intentionally will train them to use this rules when they do the essay in IELTS Writing Test.

Also, it is vital to know that plurals are important. Example, when the questions ask the candidate to fill the gap “There are many ……..”, so the answers would be “children” but not “child”.

Hence, in favor of having high score in IELTS listening, the candidates should start practicing their skill in listening to improve themselves in understanding the recording and the questions as well, or they can take IELTS Preparation Courses.
