Skills for the IELTS Listening Module

In the IELTS listening module, the recording is played once only. You must, therefore, use a number of strategies to help you listen closely. You will need four main skills to do well in the IELTS Listening Module. These Are:

    • Understanding the instruction
Instructions are both written on the question paper and spoken on the tape. read and listen to every word in the instruction very carefully. Ensure that you follow them exactly and answer in the correct way.
    • Previewing and predicting
    An announcer will briefly outline:

    1. The Topic            2. Who is Talking   3. The situation

Try to listen carefully as this will help you to preview the question.

Before the recording begins for each section, you will be given up to 30 seconds to read and become familiar with the question. Use this time efficiently so that you can prepare your self to listen for the information you need.

Here some hint for previewing and predicting:
    • Study the question carefully and try to predict what type of answer is required. For example, will it be a date, a name or maybe a number ?
    • Check the differences between similar looking pictures or diagrams.
    • Look for minor details such as different number or omissions
In addition to the seconds before each section. you will also be given 30 seconds after each section to look over your answer. If you are satisfied with your answer in the section you have just finished, move on to the next section and use the full 60 seconds for previewing.
    • Listening for specific information
use of previewing and predicting skills will help you listen for the specifics information you need to answer the question in the Listening Module. Listening for key words and common connective word often help to signal the specifics information that you need in order to answer the question. Make sure that while you are actually writing your answers, you continue to listen to the information given in the recording as there will not be a second opportunity to hear it.
    • Checking and Rewriting
You are given about 30 seconds after each section to check your answer. Check that all your answer correspond with the given instructions.

Make sure that you have answered every question. Marks are not deducted for incorrect answer so, if you are unsure of a particular answer, you should guess by writing down what you think is the most likely answer.

Check that you have included only wgat is necessary in the answer. At the end of the Listening Module, you are given about 10 minutes to transfer your answer from the question paper onto the answer sheet. Scan your answer to ensure that you have transferred them correctly, so that the number on the question paper corresponds with the number on the answer sheet. Be especially carefull when transferring answer from tables as sometimes the items are not ordered linearly.

Perhatikan contoh soal berikut :

You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

Write about the following topic :

The exploration and development of safe alternatives tofossil fuels should be the most important global priority today.

To what extent do you agree or disagree ?

Give reason for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

    Write at least 250 words.

Contoh jawaban yang baik pada soal di atas sbb:

It is true to say that fossil fuels are still our main source fo energy today, and as more countries develop their industries and their economies, the scale of their use countinues to grow.

However, we are now well aware of the consequences of relying on this energy source for our natural environment. Global warming and the damage to the protective ozone layer are caused by carbon dioxide and other by-products of fossil fuels. So I certainly agree that this problems are global rather than national ones. They threaten our whole planet and no action by single country could solve them. Furthermore these problem are urgent as nobody knows when our natural world will be so damaged that it will no longer be able to support us.

While some countries already use safer alternative energy sources, such as wind, water or solar power, it seem that there has not been sufficent investment in developing the technology to make such alternatives viable for all. So it should definitely be a global priority to invest in such research and development.

Of course there are other global priorities that we also need to address, such as poverty and diseases. But while it may be the case that these problems are just as important as the energy problem, there is a sense that time is ticking away for our planet and any solution to the energy issue will take some time to achieve.

So in conclusion, I would agree that finding alternatives to fossil fuels is certainly the most pressing global priority, if not the most important one for our world today.

How to Prepare an IELTS Listening Test

How to Prepare an IELTS Listening Test. IELTS stands for international English language testing system and it consists of four components, which are, writing, listening, reading and speaking. Right now, I would like to discuss more about the listening segment. Personally, I believe that the segment of listening is somewhat easy yet confusing. It is easy because as long as the candidates really pay attention to the audio, they can easily get the correct answers. It is also confusing because every speaker in the given audio does not always have the same voice, tone or accent, and for some students, especially the international ones, it can be quite difficult for them to comprehend what the speaker is talking about.
First and foremost, I would like to inform that IELTS listening has four sections and more often than not, they are in the structures of multiple choice, map, table or form, and summary.
When a contender enters the examination room, he or she must be prepared to concentrate their brain and hearing. This is not only for the audio itself because most of the time, the examiner might give candidates rules and regulation that they need to adhere to. Never wander nor dwell because these two reasons will inhibit the participants’ performance while taking the test.
The first task that candidates have to do after the listening papers have been distributed is to read all the instructions provided. After that, it is a must for every candidate to understand the questions and information given. Candidates are advisable to underline and know every key word they can find because keywords are the words that will help them to find possible answers. Candidates are also encouraged to predict every potential answer between questions or fill in the blanks. It is also very important for them to recognize the paraphrases, because there will be a lot of words, phrases and sentences that have the same meanings but when one breaks it down, those words might be foreign to beginners. In order to excel this listening examination, focusing minds and ears is a duty every contender must perform.

How to Prepare an IELTS speaking Test

Every pupil has his or her own responsibilities when it comes to academic purposes. Examination is a significant evaluation that they have to pass and excel in order to continue to the next level academically. Obtaining an excellent IELTS score is definitely what students, especially the international ones, must do besides having an outstanding academic transcript, to get admitted into a university.
IELTS itself actually stands for international English language testing system and it consists of four components, which are writing, listening, reading and speaking. As of right now, I would like to dwell more particularly in the speaking area. IELTS speaking have three sections, simply called the first section, the second section and the third section. It is advisable for every contender to answer the questions and deliver the speech in complete sentences with consistent fluency intact.
The first section is actually the least difficult one because most of the time, it is basically a series of questions about the applicant with the purpose of getting to know them better. The second section usually starts with the examiner giving the applicant a topic and a few questions, he or she has to write it down on a piece of paper. This segment needs to be vocalized in the arrangement of introduction, body and conclusion. While introduction and conclusion are self-explanatory, body is the platform where the applicant must answer the given questions with appropriate elaboration sufficiently. In my opinion, the second section is the most difficult one because it only provides a 1-minute time for the candidate to construct a 2-minute speech.
The third section is actually a little bit complex because it contains a long set of questions, which could be related to the second section, and it requires the applicant to answer those questions directly without hesitation. This section could be simple in a way that the applicant is obviously the one who determines how to answer the questions eloquently. It is important to note that every applicant is allowed to amplify their answers for all those three sections, if need be.

In conclusion, though the idea of doing an examination still has the potential to intimidate people, even today, it should not limit their ability to keep learning and doing as best as possible.
